Kenshokan Martial Arts Academy

A couple of years ago, my son, Ryan (now ten years old and weighing fifty pounds) needed to learn self defense because of some kids bullying him at school.  I Googled “self-defense” and found Kenshokan Martial Arts Academy’s website.  It was conveniently located on
Victory Blvd.
in Woodland Hills.  I called (818)347-3656 and spoke to Sensei Gregory Poretz.  He invited us to try a free lesson.  At one of the classes (that are always fun and new), a stack of mats were placed in front of Ryan, about up to his waist.  Sensei told the kids to stand in front of the mats and then jump up with their knees landing on top of the pile of mats.  It looked impossible to me, but it was like magic!  Sensei told them they could do it and so they did!  He makes kids believe in themselves.  Their voices are heard, not only in their own heads, but by their opponents, as well.  One of Ryan’s “friends” was picking on him.  Ryan let out a very loud yell, from deep down in his gut.  His “friend” came and asked me, “What was that!!!”  Another time we went climbing over some rocks on a rushing river.  Ryan was not afraid to jump from rock to rock and had a really good sense of balance.  He had not showed that before and I told Sensei about it.  Sensei teaches not only Jujitsu, but respect, confidence, coordination, strength, history, courtesy and some comedy too.  Sometimes when the parents watch the class, Sensei throws out some one-liners that are usually so fast, you don’t see them coming.  It is like a big family (excluding the bickering) with the other students too.  A kind of controlled play date that has led to new friends and for me too.  Sometimes I am lucky enough that Sensei’s wife Tammy (who teaches the after school homework program at the Dojo), has time to come and chat with me after class. The schedule is convenient; the kids can go almost everyday if they want and can even be picked up from their school, very cool!!!
